Martin Luther King, Jr., Observance 2010

why king matters now: a youth writing program

Inspired by the words of Martin Luther King Jr., children and teens living in Portland
will have the opportunity to practice and improve their writing skills by creating a
short reflective statement, poem, letter, or speech in honor of the great leader.

Trained by The Telling Room, NAACP Youth Council members will join other
young community members and college students in delivering a series of
workshops in early December at the study centers located in the Kennedy
Park, Parkside, Riverton and Sagamore Village neighborhoods. One of the
goals of the program is to empower young people to express their views
through the written word. The work produced will be published and pre-
sented as part of the annual NAACP MLK Breakfast Celebration held on
January 18, 2010.

If young people are interested in continuing their writing, other
opportunities will be made available throughout the next year.
